The vehicles were developed on the basis of the T-54
and T-55 tanks with ATO-54
and ATO-200 automatic flame-throwers being installed instead of the coaxial
machine gun in the tank turret.
This
design made it possible to enlarge the firepower capabilities. In
so doing, all the characteristics of the baseline tank as to
protection, mobility and armament, as well as tank appearance,
were retained.
The tanks could throw burning mixture at a distance of up to
160 m with fire rate of up to 20 throws per minute.
The tanks ware accepted for service and entered series
production at the Omsk Transport Machine Construction Plant.
The Obiekt 483 flame-thrower
prototype tank featured installation of the flame-thrower in place
of the main gun, this resulting in decrease of the tank's
firepower. Following trials with the prototype vehicle,
development work on this ceased.
